Two tracking problems usually solved separately
Inside the gate the question is dwell: which trailer is on which bay, how long a repair job has stood untouched, whether a compressor left the yard on a bakkie. On the road it is movement: the sanctioned route, the unexplained three-hour stop, whether fuel drawn matches distance covered. Most firms buy a road tracker and never solve the site half, so the handover between the two — where losses hide — stays invisible.
On-site tracking with BLE tags
BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) tags are small battery-powered beacons fixed to assets, trailers, tools or staff cards. Readers at gates, bays and stores log when a tagged item entered a zone and how long it stayed, with no cabling and nobody writing anything down. That answers the questions that cost money: which jobs sit idle, which plant item has not moved in a fortnight, whether a tool left the store and never came back.
On-road tracking, fuel and driver risk
Vehicle units report position, speed, ignition and, where the sensor exists, fuel level. The value is not the dot on the map — every tracker sells you that — it is the rules on top: route corridors, permitted stops, night movement, harsh braking per driver, fuel drops with no matching refuelling. Fuel drawn is compared with distance covered per leg, so siphoning appears as a pattern on a route or a driver rather than a monthly argument. Border legs are timed separately, so hours lost at Beitbridge do not distort your own figures.
Works with the trackers you already have
You almost certainly have something already: a telematics unit, a fuel card system, a job card in a dealer management system, a weighbridge that prints tickets. We read from those rather than replacing them, and add the context that makes a position report mean something — job number, customer, load, driver on shift. Standardising on one vendor is expensive and rarely necessary.
Built for interrupted networks and unreliable power
Coverage across rural corridors and inside steel-framed workshops is not continuous, and site power is not guaranteed. Readers buffer locally and forward when the link returns, so an outage delays data rather than destroying it. The system degrades honestly: if a reader is down you are told that zone is unmonitored, rather than shown a clean screen that quietly stopped updating.

Fuel loss detection
Fuel readings are matched against refuelling records, ignition and distance covered. Drops with no legitimate fill behind them are flagged by vehicle, route and driver.
Driver behaviour patterns
Speeding, harsh braking, idling and night movement are recorded per driver rather than per vehicle, so patterns follow the person across the fleet.
Job and bay timing
In workshops and yards, tags turn job progress into measured time per stage, so a stalled job surfaces as an exception, not at month end.
Alerts that reach a person
Exceptions go by WhatsApp to the manager who can act — transport manager or foreman — with scheduled summaries for the operations director.

Site assessment

Integration
We fit readers and tags where they are needed and connect existing telematics, fuel and job systems. At first the system only observes, building a factual baseline of how the operation runs before any rule may fire.
Rules and guardrails
Geofences, permitted stops, dwell thresholds, fuel variance rules and escalation paths are agreed with your managers and tested against real historical movement, so alerts are calibrated before anyone must respond to one.
Go live and optimise
Alerts start reaching people. We review weekly at first, tuning thresholds that prove too noisy or too quiet, then extend to the next depot or asset class. A typical first system takes approximately four to six weeks.
Questions buyers ask
Do we have to replace our existing vehicle trackers?
Usually not. If your units report reliably we integrate with them and add site tracking, rules and operational context on top. New hardware is recommended only where units have failed, are unsupported, or cannot give a signal you need, such as fuel level.
What happens in areas with no mobile coverage?
Readers and vehicle units store data locally and upload when the connection returns, so a stretch without coverage becomes a gap that fills in later rather than a lost leg. Live alerting pauses while a unit is out of reach, and the screen shows when it was last heard from.
How accurate is BLE tag tracking indoors?
BLE gives zone-level accuracy, not a precise coordinate. You will know a trailer is on the wash bay or a tool is in the store, not where it stands within that zone. For the operational questions — where is it, how long has it been there, did it leave site — that is enough.
Will this genuinely catch fuel theft?
It catches the pattern rather than the individual act. Correlating fuel drops with ignition, location, refuelling records and distance makes repeated losses visible against a vehicle, route or driver. That is evidence for a management investigation, not courtroom proof, and it needs a usable fuel level signal.
Who owns the tracking data and where is it stored?
You do. The system runs in your environment or a dedicated tenant under your name, with a retention period agreed in writing before go live. That includes movement data about staff, scoped to the operational purpose you define.
